Multi Channel Optical Fibre Verification

Application Description

The multi-channel optical fibre test system is used in the development and qualification of single mode optical fibres. The fibres are exposed to environmental influences in a climatic chamber in order to analyse the data on insertion loss and reflection. In addition, the current temperature in the climatic chamber is documented. Insertion loss measurement is performed with the help of an optical power meter, laser sources and optical switches. An Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) from Exfo is used for the reflection measurements. The system was designed for the simultaneous characterization of 15 sample fibres and one reference fibre.

OTP-based Test System for Railway and General Power Electronics Modules

Application Description

Power electronics assemblies often cannot be tested using conventional technology for their electrical performance. Due to the adaptability of the instrumentation, the OTP concept offers an ideal platform even beyond the space requirements of several control cabinets. In order to achieve high test flexibility with different assemblies, the system was equipped with three-phase AC sources and AC loads as well as a precise three-phase power meter. DC sources and loads with different current and voltage ranges cover the test of frequent DUT operating parameters. Time-dependent voltage or current signals can be stimulated by an arbitrary generator with power amplifier. General measurements such as current, voltage, frequency, resistance can be carried out flexibly at various test points using the matrix concept. An oscilloscope with RF multiplexer is available for high-frequency measurements such as residual ripple, switching processes, etc.

In order to be able to test DUTs with mechanically large dimensions, a worktable was supplied in which the contour of the Virginia Panel table was fully integrated. This means that even heavy DUTs can be easily integrated into the test adapter. The operator safety is guaranteed at all times thanks to specially integrated safety circuits and a positive touch protection on the test adapter. The correct functioning of the system can be checked at any time using a self-test adapter.

Special test steps for interactive operator guidance were implemented in LabVIEW.

RF-Functional Test Cell with Rotary Indexing Table

Application Description

The application encompasses functional tests of very large quantities of automotive antenna amplifiers, plus parallelization of tests by implementing several test stations in a rotary indexing table. The DUTs are inserted manually and after final assembly, they are loaded into the rotary table; this requires manual triggering by the operator. Testing takes place at the following stations of the rotary table:

  1. Checks of connector colors and screw lengths
  2. Functional tests by means of RF transmission measurements, testing of diversity functions, et. al.
  3. Functional tests, including assessment of the 3-channel radio controlled central locking
  4. Laser labelling of the DUTs and readout of the labeled data matrix code
  5. Automatic extraction of DUTs that have failed the test by means of a pneumatic gripper, and disposal of these parts in a bad parts box

Special Features

LXinstruments serves as the general contractor for the entire automation technology. Currently, there are 4 identical rotary indexing tables in use at the customer site, plus a large number of individual test systems.

Customer-specific Software

The test stations were implemented as independent software instances with parallel processing. Communication between the test stations and the PLC controller takes place via serial communication, based on IEEE-1349. All tests are fully retraceable; the test data is stored on a central database server, based on the LXinstruments test database. The entire solution was developed based on the LXinstruments standard software architecture, with additional functions for communicating with the automation technology.

64-way Burn-In System for Control Assemblies.

Application Description

Burn-in system for simultaneous testing of up to 64 DUTs in a climatic chamber based on LXI instrumentation. DUTs are tested which are mainly used as communication and measurement modules in power plant technology, grid management and electrical drives.

A customer-supplied module for DUT communication via optical (POF) communication interfaces was integrated into the system. The system has a managed Ethernet switch for communication with the DUTs.

The DUT interface was implemented in the form of ITT Cannon round connectors with bayonet locking similar to MIL connectors. Also supplied were connecting cables for the climatic chamber and corresponding fibre optics, which were designed for temperature cycles from -20 °C to +80°C.

Special Features

Systems based on the same platform are used in relatively large numbers (currently 8 systems) by customers and their suppliers in Switzerland, Thailand and China.

Customer-specific Software

Test step libraries were created or extended to suit the instruments used.

IVTS In-Vehicle Test Set

IVTS In-Vehicle Test Set

Application Description

The in-vehicle test set was developed to successively measure several active RF amplifiers installed in the vehicle as well as different antenna structures. It offers the possibility to connect 12 DUTs. The DUTs can be connected to an external spectrum analyser via a 1 to 12 RF multiplexer. Each DUT can be individually switched and supplied with an adjustable voltage via a bias-tee integrated in the system. The individual bias voltages and currents are recorded by the IVTS and can be called up on an interactive control panel or via Ethernet and SCPI commands. The complete system can be powered by rechargeable battery and can be operated either via Ethernet, fibre optics or WLAN.

The system includes an embedded controller, which offers an interactive Java-based website for operating and monitoring the device. In addition, the system offers an I2C interface for easy expansion of peripheral devices such as DIO or temperature measurement.

Often the system is placed with the rechargeable battery on the passenger seat of a test car equipped with DUTs and operated in an EMC chamber with turntable.

Customer-specific Software

Especially for this project an interactive website in Java was developed to display and operate the system. An SCPI-based command set for controlling the system functions was also implemented.

Multi-function-tester with modular OTP Design for Chemical Analytics

Application Description

Multi-function-tester, based on the LXinstruments OTP2 system platform. The system is utilized for assembly and final testing as well as calibrating measurement devices for chemical analytics in a high mix / medium volume environment.

Special emphasis was placed on the exceptional metrological performance of the system. Once some central instruments have been calibrated, it is possible for the customer to perform a partly automated calibration by means of a calibration adapter and corresponding software.

The adapter interface is based on DIN 41612 connectors plus single connectors, e. g. for RF channels; it is compatible with existing systems, which are due for replacement.

Besides the fully functional test system described above, we implemented a series of smaller, compatible systems based on the same system architecture. These systems are entirely based on the LXinstruments software suite.

Special Features

The customer is involved in the further development of our software platform as a development partner and beta tester.

Customer-specific Software

For this system, we implemented a comprehensive suite of self-test and calibration software, based on the LXinstruments software suite. All product-related test results as well as all measurement data captured during calibration are managed via a relational database (MySQL).

The database interfaces were enhanced in order to allow flexible storage of product characteristics as well as other product data, and for easy integration into the customer's process environment.

EN 60601 Safety Compliance Test

Safety Compliance Test Systems for Medical Products according to 60601-1 3rd generation.

Application Description

Test system for electrical safety compliance testing of medical products in accordance with EN 60601-1, 3rd edition.
The system is equipped with three test fixtures which are connected in parallel order to reduce the number of setup tasks for different variants in the course of day-to-day manufacturing processes. Its purpose is to test medical products, e. g. patient monitors, which are employed at hospitals to monitor heartbeat and oxygen saturation.
Based on the integrated electrical safety tester by Associated Research, in combination with an AC power source and a switching matrix, it is possible to fully automate tests like for instance AC/DC high-voltage tests, insulation resistance measurements, earth connection tests and leakage current measurements.
The required occupational safety is provided by a high-voltage safety hood in accordance with EN 501191. The entire safety technology, as well as the control PC, is mounted in an aluminum-profile cart.

Special Features

The platform has been established as a standard in the field of electrical safety testing. Many of our customers take advantage of this wheeled test system solution with its functional high-voltage test enclosure for testing the electrical safety of their products. The system can be easily upgraded, whether in respect to the number of test points or the electrical test parameters; it can thus be adapted to all customer-specific requirements.

Customer-specific Software

The standard software environment for this system is the Autoware II platform by Associated Research.  If the customer should have any advanced software requirements, there is an alternative option available: the LXinstruments SW suite with its integrated test sequencer, operator interface and SQL database.

Optionally, the customer may also develop the test software in-house.

Application Description

Multifunctional function tester with parallel test function based on the LXinstruments OTP2 system platform. The system is used for assembly, final test and calibration of liquid and level sensors for commercial vehicles, construction machinery and shipbuilding in a high mix / medium volume environment.

The system supports 5-fold asynchronous simultaneous testing of different assemblies. It has been universally designed as a platform to replace various existing test benches and to create a future-oriented basis for new test applications. Critical hardware such as multimeters and power supply modules exist for parallel use for each test station. The switching matrix can be used in 5 individual matrices or as a combined switching matrix to cover more complex test applications with the same system.

The systems are completely based on the LXinstruments Software Suite.

Special Features

The system is able to execute 5 asynchronous test sequences in parallel on one control computer. The user interface has been extended to visualize all 5 sequences simultaneously.

Customer-specific Software

The TSCOE user interface has been enhanced for simultaneous visualization of all 5 processes. All product-related test results and data measured during calibration are managed in a relational database (MySQL).

With the open database interface linking to the customer’s ERP system was intended on the part of the customer. The database interfaces were extended to enable flexible storage of product properties and other product data, so that a very convenient integration into the customer’s process landscape became possible.

Burn-In System for up to 80 DUTs in climatic chamber

Application Description

Burn-in system, based on LXI instrumentation, for concurrent testing of up to 80 DUTs in a climatic chamber. Devices to be tested include modern light emitting diodes and LED modules.

The system consists of 2 control cabinets, each with 40 independent supply and measurement channels. Each channel can be configured individually via the operator software (current or voltage, including the relevant limit values). The software supports logging of current and voltage values for each DUT on all 80 channels with a sampling rate of <1s. Additionally, the software and system also support digital I/O channels, e. g. for controlling the climatic chamber. Inputs for connecting temperature sensors are also provided.

Special Features

By using inexpensive LXI-based power supplies, it was possible to implement a separate supply for each DUT channel, with support for current and voltage measurements.

Customer-specific Software

The software for the burn-in system was universally developed based on customer project requirements and is available for future burn-in applications. According to the customer's request, the application software was entirely developed in NI LabView.

Test systems for impedance measurements on inductive rail components for safety-related train control applications.

Application Description

The test system is used for measuring impedance and for tuning oscillating circuits on inductive modules; it is based on LXI instrumentation for high mix/low volume production, and as a repair station. The DUTs to be tested are predominantly employed in railway traffic technology, e. g. for counting axles, as well as for communications.
The system is equipped with a customer-specific 19" switch panel for connecting calibration adapters, adapters for self-tests and test adapters. The work area is designed to be free of metal, thereby supporting the precise calibration and measurement needs of oscillating circuits. The system has an integrated sweep generator which includes a broadband multimeter for impedance measurements. Operator safety is enforced by a light curtain.

The instruments are integrated into a shelf top structure, thereby providing ample workspace for manual process steps. LXinstruments also implements customized test systems which cater for the precise measurement requirements of the application.

Special Features

In recent years, systems with this type of design have already been employed as a successful platform for a variety of applications and tests.

Customer-specific Software

The test libraries were developed to cater for the requirements of the relevant instruments; LabVIEW was used to design and enhance the application-specific interactive work steps.  The user interface was specifically customized for the customer's requirement profile. The test database was implemented based on a Microsoft SQL Server.

Application Description

Application Description

The load system is intended for testing satellite power supply systems; due to the integration with a solar array simulator and a battery simulator, it can perform validation and commissioning of satellite power supplies. The system is equipped with regenerative electronic loads and customer-specific high-power switching matrices for routing the DUT channels to the relevant loads. The individual voltages and currents for each channel can be read back via a Keysight Technologies switch mainframe.


The system is equipped with high electrical power; its loads are capable of feeding the energy back into the power grid.


The system is controlled and programmed via Ethernet. It comprises interlinked safety circuits in order to ensure operator protection.

Application Description

The battery simulator is used for testing satellite power supplies and is used in combination with a Solar Array Simulator and load systems (consumer simulation) for the validation and commissioning of satellite power supplies. Loads and power supplies in the battery simulator are operated in combination to represent a 2-square function and to simulate both charging and discharging of the battery.
The system has a high electrical output and can supply currents of up to 400A in the voltage range up to approx. 100V.
The system is controlled and programmed via Ethernet and has interconnectable safety circuits to safeguard operator safety.

Solar Array Simulator

Solar array simulators for testing satellite power supplies

Application Description

Among other things, solar array simulators are required for testing satellite power supplies. An SAS (Solar Array Simulator), consisting of an interconnection of several Solar Array Simulator modules, maps the solar panels and displays the individual strings connected in parallel. Optionally, the individual SAS modules are monitored by a Second Level Protection, so that the test object is not damaged in case of errors with the voltage sources. Additional circuitry is implemented via project-specific test modules. The signal path to the DUT can be separated, e.g. for dynamic current measurements.
The Keysight Solar Array Simulators used were specially developed for satellite applications and cover the significantly higher requirements regarding the control speed of MPP tracking compared to terrestrial applications.
The system has a protocol server for the C&C CCSDS protocol and a command interpreter. With its help, commands from the higher-level CCS (Central Checkout System) are converted to the programming of the physical SAS modules. The interconnection of the modules (parallel connection to provide large currents) is encapsulated from the user. The Solar Array Simulator acts as a large instrument.
The software is operated on a box PC integrated into the rack. The external programming interface was implemented as an Ethernet interface.

Compact System for Chemical Analysis Technology

Application Description

Small test system based on the LXinstruments OTP2 system platform. The system is used for assembly, final test and calibration of measuring instruments for chemical analysis in a high mix / medium volume environment.

Due to the small dimensions, the DUT can be connected directly to the adapter interface next to the system.

Special importance was attached to a high metrological performance of the system. By means of a calibration adapter and corresponding software, the system can be partially automatically calibrated by the customer after calibration of some central instruments.

The adapter interface was implemented compatible to already existing systems, which are in the process of being replaced, based on VG strips and single connectors, e.g. for RF channels.

In addition to the small test system presented here, a system with the same system architecture but with additional high-precision instruments was also implemented. The systems are completely based on the LXinstruments Software Suite.

Special Features

The customer participates as a development partner and beta tester in the further development of our software platform.

Customer-specific Software

Extensive self-test and calibration software based on the LXinstruments Software Suite was implemented for the system. All product-related test results and data measured during calibration are managed in a relational database (MySQL).

Design Verification

Automotive RF Design Verfication Test System

Application Description

The system is used for design verification of RF assemblies. By using similar measurement technology and test software as in the production testers, parts of the test procedures developed in development can be reused in production. The DUTs are tested in RF-tight shield boxes and contacted via original plugs. The shield boxes are connected via N-connectors and other typical laboratory contacts. This allows test setups to be easily modified and individual signal paths to be separated.

For switching the signals, LXinstruments has implemented two 19-inch plug-in modules that feature excellent reproducibility of the switched signal paths through the use of high-quality RF relays and semi-rigid cabling. The system has 24 stimulus and 24 response paths. Phantom power levels can be applied to all response paths via a power supply matrix and BiasTs.

Special attention was paid to a low noise level in the rack. The system is therefore supplied via special line filters, and linearly regulated power supplies are used to supply the auxiliary voltages.

Door Handle System

System for Analyzing Door Handles

Application Description

In the production process of a vehicle door handle, the electrical functions of the component are to be tested. The mechanical testing of the operation of the door handle is performed by a PLC-controlled test system. In addition to the mechanical test, the electrical parameters: “serial data stream” and “impedance of the antenna” are to be analysed.

The test system described here fulfils the following tasks: Testing door handles by measuring the antenna over LCR meter. A distinction is made between “door handle opened or closed actuated”. Communication with the PLC of the machine takes place via DIO interface.

E-Mobility: Function, Safety and Performance Tests for Charging Cables and Wall Boxes

Intelligent Charging Cable: Test Strategy and Test Execution

Application Description

The ICCB takes over the safety and control functions that are otherwise integrated in the stationary charging station. This places increased demands on the function test in production.

Test strategy: Separate function tests for the “operating and control unit” module and the “power electronics”.                 

The test of combined assemblies usually includes separate pre-tests of the two assemblies as well as the EOL test after assembly. During the functional test of the electronics, the power supply is first checked and the test firmware is programmed. Furthermore, the “internal electronics”, voltages at test points, interfaces such as I2C, SPI, CAN... as well as radio interfaces such as WLAN, Bluetooth are tested.

As instruments for functional testing of the control modules are often used:

  • DC voltage sources with current monitoring
  • JTAG programming devices
  • Test firmware and boundary-scan HW
  • Multiplexer/matrices for switching the test points to the measuring instruments
  • Multimeter/oscilloscope/counter
  • Test interfaces for I2C, SPI, CAN
  • Coupling antennas and RF power meters or corresponding remote stations

  • Safety or insulation test with HV (5 contacts network to 5 contacts vehicle as well as test RCD/FI protection)
  • Communication test e.g. Powerline

Application Description

Insulated test booth with large space for test items. 2 banana sockets for AC connection and 4 banana sockets for the DC connection of the DUTs. IC’s are tested in a long-term test. These are checked in an oil bath so that there are no air gaps to reduce the insulation. Maximum voltage 20 kV. Therefore, insulation tests must be carried out. Ensuring the standard-compliant test. For the safety of the operating personnel, the test cell is electrically locked while the high voltage measurement is active.
