Bidirectional Regenerative DC Power Supply (Source and Sink)
ITECH IT6000C: When a Bidirectional DC Supply Is Needed
The ITECH IT6000C series is a bidirectional power supply designed for test and measurement systems where electrical energy must be charged and discharged in a controlled manner. It is used in applications where energy flows in both directions and the system operates as both a DC source and a DC load. This is typically required in tests where charging and discharging processes must be performed within a single test cycle without switching between separate power supplies and electronic DC loads.
Source and Load in One System
In conventional test setups, DC sources and electronic DC loads are often implemented as separate devices. This increases system complexity, requires additional switching logic, and makes reproducible testing under dynamic operating conditions more difficult. The IT6000C series integrates source and sink functionality within a single bidirectional DC power supply, enabling continuous changes in energy flow within a test or simulation scenario without external switching components.
When Regeneration Matters
The regenerative function of the ITECH IT6000C series becomes relevant when operating in load mode over extended periods or at high output power. In such tests—such as endurance or simulation testing—absorbed energy would otherwise be fully converted into heat. As a regenerative DC power supply, the IT6000C series feeds this energy back into the grid in a controlled manner.
Tests Requiring Bidirectional Operation
Certain test scenarios can only be realized with significant additional effort when using conventional DC power supplies or separate DC loads. These include testing of energy storage systems, power electronic assemblies, or DC-coupled systems with recuperative operating modes. Simulating real operating profiles with alternating source and load conditions within a single test sequence also requires a bidirectional DC power supply with integrated control.
DC Scope and System Alternatives
The IT6000C is used in DC test setups where energy flow on the DC side is precisely controlled and charging, discharging, and regenerative processes are part of the test logic. Functions for simulating AC grids or grid disturbances are outside the scope of this system. For test applications that only require a static DC supply, a conventional DC power supply is often the technically appropriate solution. For these and other tasks, we offer suitable programmable DC power supplies and support the selection of the most appropriate device.
Alternative Products
If you are looking for a very similar bidirectional DC power supply with regenerative feedback, we recommend the ITECH IT6000B series. If you need significantly more power and scalability, the ITECH IT6600C series is the right alternative.
