Linear AC Power Source for Grid and Inverter Testing
AC Input Testing Under Defined Mains Conditions
The GW Instek APS-7000 series applies programmable voltage and frequency profiles to the AC input of power supplies and LED drivers. For PV inverters, it reproduces grid conditions at the AC connection and displays reverse power. The standard range covers 0 to 310 Vrms at 45 to 500 Hz, while voltage, current, power, power factor, and peak current are measured directly.
Testing Power Failures, Voltage Fluctuations, and Reverse Current
Simulate Mode reproduces power failures, voltage rises, and voltage drops. Sequence Mode generates time-based output profiles, while Program Mode compares measured values with defined limits and returns PASS or FAIL.
When an inverter feeds current back, the source can absorb up to 30% of the maximum RMS output current continuously and up to 100% for no more than three minutes. Within these limits, no additional load resistor is required to protect the AC source.
Reproducing Distorted Waveforms and Inrush Current
For non-sinusoidal supply conditions, ARB Mode combines seven waveform groups into up to 20,000 voltage waveforms, including clipped sine waves and waveforms with high crest factors. Surge/Dip Control overlays a temporary voltage rise or dip on the fundamental waveform. Ipk Hold captures and holds the highest inrush current value, while Ramp Control determines how quickly the output voltage rises or falls.
Selection by Test Requirement and Operating Point
Test voltage, continuous and inrush current, and possible reverse current determine the required power rating between 500 and 3000 VA. Depending on the version, Remote Sense compensates for voltage drops across long connection cables up to the DUT. For higher test requirements, the output can be optionally extended to 600 Vrms or 999.9 Hz.
As the series supplies AC voltage only, it is not intended for DC source, electronic load, or electrical safety testing.
Alternative Products
For AC input testing up to 1000 VA, the GW Instek APS-7000E Series provides a reduced-feature alternative. Test setups that require bidirectional AC/DC operation and an integrated load function can use the Kewell G6000 Series. For regenerative four-quadrant grid simulation and higher power ratings, consider the ITECH IT7900 Series.
