What does Frequency mean in electrical Engineering?
In electrical engineering, frequency describes how often an electrical signal or AC voltage repeats per second. Frequency is measured in hertz (Hz). It plays a key role in the design and operation of electronic circuits, filters, power supplies, communication systems, and measuring instruments.
Why are Frequencies essential for electrical Signals, measuring Instruments, and modern Electronics?
They're essential because many system characteristics – including signal quality, susceptibility to interference, and transmission speed – depend directly on the correct frequency selection. In other fields, frequency generally refers to how often an event occurs, for example in statistics, transportation, or medicine.
A common example of a frequency specification is the grid frequency in the power network: In Europe, AC voltage signals oscillate at 50 Hz, meaning the waveform completes fifty full cycles per second. Another typical example is Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz, equivalent to 2.4 billion oscillations per second.
