Arbitrary Function Generator with Pulse and RF Options

Signals for Circuit, Filter and Control Testing

Depending on the version, the GW Instek MFG-2000 Series combines one or two arbitrary function generator channels (AFG channels) with a separate 25 MHz pulse generator, an RF signal generator up to 160 or 320 MHz and a 20 W power amplifier. The separate outputs simultaneously provide clock, trigger, modulation and excitation signals. This allows users to drive circuit assemblies, analyze filters with sweeps or apply custom waveforms.

Arbitrary Waveforms, Pulses and Modulation

The AFG channels generate sine, square, triangle, ramp, pulse, noise and user-defined waveforms. For arbitrary waveforms, they provide 14-bit resolution, 16k-point memory and 200 MSa/s; the MFG-2220HM reaches 250 MSa/s. Pulse width, duty cycle, rise time and fall time can be adjusted independently at the separate pulse output. Depending on the model, sweep, burst, AM, FM, PM, FSK, PWM and a 150 MHz frequency counter extend the available functions.

Coupled Channels and Custom Waveforms

On the dual-channel models, the frequency, amplitude and phase of both AFG outputs can be coupled. This produces phase-shifted signal pairs or differential signals for comparative measurements and synchronized drive applications. Custom waveforms can be transferred via CSV or the AWES software; MFG-22XX instruments can also import recorded waveforms from compatible GW Instek oscilloscopes.

Selecting the Channel Count, Frequency and Output

Depending on the model, the maximum AFG frequency is 10, 20, 30, 60 or 200 MHz. Two AFG channels are required when signals need to be coupled, phase-shifted or output differentially. Versions with an additional RF output up to 320 MHz are available for higher carrier frequencies. The 20 W channel amplifies low-frequency signals but does not replace a programmable power supply. With the exception of the MFG-2220HM, the inputs and outputs are isolated from earth up to ±42 Vpk. USB is standard, while LAN is available on MFG-22XX models.

Alternative Products

If two mutually isolated signal channels, 16-bit resolution and long arbitrary waveforms are more important than additional pulse, RF or amplifier channels, the GW Instek AFG-30xx Series is a suitable alternative. For a single output with frequencies up to 80 MHz and 1 Mpts of arbitrary waveform memory, consider the GW Instek AFG-3000 Series.
