Product Information "High Power AC/DC Electronic Load | AEL-5000 Series"

GW Instek AEL-5000 Series – Electronic AC/DC Loads

High-performance electronic loads for demanding test applications
The electronic AC/DC loads of the GW Instek AEL-5000 Series include a total of 20 models and cover a power range from 1,875 W to 22.5 kW per unit. By connecting up to eight units in parallel, scalable test systems can be implemented with a maximum total power of 180 kW in single-phase operation and up to 540 kW in three-phase operation.
The series is designed for professional testing of UPS systems, inverters, AC/DC power sources, batteries, fuses, circuit breakers, and other power electronic components.

Precise measurement functions for AC and DC testing
The AEL-5000 Series features integrated high-precision measurement circuits with 16-bit A/D converters and a digital signal processor (DSP). This ensures reliable and reproducible measurement results for demanding measurement and analysis tasks.

Measured parameters include:

  • RMS voltage (Ueff)
  • RMS current (Ieff)
  • Active power (W)
  • Apparent power (VA)
  • Power factor (PF)
  • Crest factor (CF)
  • Total harmonic distortion (THD), THDU and THDI
  • Peak current (IS)
  • Minimum and maximum values of current and voltage (Imin/Imax, Umin/Umax)
  • Time-related measurement parameters

Integrated test modes for efficiency and safety testing
The electronic loads of the AEL-5000 Series support a wide range of integrated automatic test modes covering typical test procedures in development, production, and quality assurance:

  • UPS efficiency and backup time
  • PV inverter efficiency
  • Battery discharge time
  • UPS transfer time
  • Fuse tripping and circuit breaker tests
  • Short-circuit simulation
  • OCP and OPP tests

Turbo mode for dynamic high-load and short-time tests
For test applications requiring temporarily increased power or current—such as overload tests, protection component testing, or short-circuit tests—a switchable turbo mode is available. In this mode, current and power can be doubled within one second.

Load-on start, bandwidth adjustment, and inrush analysis
The Load-On-Start function allows a predefined load to be activated immediately at power-up. This enables realistic evaluation of the start-up behavior of UPS systems or inverters.
With the adjustable bandwidth function (BW), the electronic load can be precisely matched to the dynamics of the device under test. In addition, the inrush current function analyzes the transient behavior of the output voltage during inrush currents and sudden load changes (surge current).

Protection functions and system integration
All models of the AEL-5000 Series are equipped with comprehensive protection mechanisms against overvoltage, overcurrent, overpower, and overtemperature. External control signals can be applied via the analog input to switch between constant current, constant power, and other operating modes.
The integrated V/I monitor terminal allows connection of external devices for voltage or current monitoring. Optional interfaces such as GPIB, RS-232, USB, and LAN support seamless integration into automated test systems.
