Active Power
What Is Active Power?
Active power describes the portion of electrical power that is directly converted into usable energy in AC and DC systems.
It occurs when current and voltage are in phase and no energy is stored in electric or magnetic fields. In DC applications, the delivered power corresponds entirely to active power. In AC systems, it represents the actually usable portion of apparent power.
In practice, active power occurs in many load situations under both AC and DC supply conditions. Examples include heating modules, electric drives, power electronics, as well as regulated AC and DC sources.
Active power influences the thermal load on components and the dimensioning of power supplies and electronic loads. In test and measurement environments, it serves as a reliable parameter for evaluating the actual operating behavior of a DUT.
Because active power describes the actual work-performing capability of a system, it is a key parameter for the analysis of efficiency, energy demand, and load capacity. In AC applications, it is considered together with reactive power and apparent power to fully assess power behavior. In DC systems, it is the only relevant power component.
