Active RF Probe Tip for Internal Circuit Nodes and On-Wafer Probing up to 3 GHz
PICOPROBE Modell 34A: Testing Small Measurement Points With Low Signal Impact
The GGB PICOPROBE® Model 34A is an active RF probe tip for measurements on internal nodes of RF circuits. In the probing setup, the probe tip contacts small measurement points precisely and places only a low load on the circuit. It routes the acquired signal to a 50-Ohm oscilloscope input. At the measurement point, the input has a nominal impedance of 10 MΩ in parallel with 0.1 pF; the frequency response extends from DC to 3 GHz (-3 dB).
Capturing Fast RF Signals Directly in the Circuit
Internal measurement points in RF circuits are sensitive to additional load at the contact point. The PICOPROBE® Model 34A therefore combines a frequency response from DC to 3 GHz with a low nominal input load. The active probe tip also transmits DC components in the signal path and captures fast signal edges with a rise and fall time of 120 ps for a 5 V pulse.
20:1 Signal at the 50-Ω Oscilloscope Input
At the measurement point, the active probe tip is designed for voltages from -7 V to +10 V. The 20:1 signal attenuation applies at the 50-Ω oscilloscope input and must be taken into account when reading the measurement instrument.
Choosing the Right Tungsten-Wire Tip for Fine Contact Points
Contacting is performed using replaceable tungsten-wire probe tips with wire diameters from 5 µm to 125 µm and corresponding tip radii. Fine tungsten-wire tips make it easier to contact small, sensitive measurement points. Larger wire diameters provide more mechanical reserve when higher contact force is required. Wire diameter and tip radius therefore have to match the measurement task and the probing setup.
Alternative Products
If your application calls for passive RF or microwave contacting instead of an active RF probe tip, the PICOPROBE® Model 10 Series is worth a closer look.
