Bidirectional DC-Source/Load
What is a Bidirectional DC Source/Load?
A bidirectional DC source/load combines a controllable DC source with an electronic load. This allows charging and discharging processes, load changes and operating states of DC systems to be simulated with a single test instrument.
In source mode, the device provides a defined DC voltage or DC current. In load mode, it absorbs energy from the device under test, for example when discharging a battery or testing a bidirectional DC/DC converter.
An important distinction: Bidirectional does not automatically mean regenerative. Whether the absorbed energy is converted into heat, transferred internally or fed back into the supply grid depends on the device type.
Key selection criteria include voltage range, current range, power in both operating directions, control dynamics, measurement and control accuracy, interfaces, protection functions and regenerative capability.
