What Is a Grid Simulator?
A grid simulator, also known as a mains simulator, generates defined electrical grid conditions for test benches. It is used to test equipment not only under normal grid conditions but also under controlled deviations. Suitable systems are available in our Grid Simulators and Simulators category.
Depending on the model, parameters such as voltage, frequency and waveform can be varied. This enables reproducible testing of voltage dips, voltage swells, frequency deviations and harmonics.
Typical devices under test include inverters, energy storage systems, chargers and other grid-connected equipment.
A grid simulator therefore differs from a basic programmable AC power supply. Compared with an AC power supply, a grid simulator enables targeted testing of DUT behavior under changing grid conditions. Suitable devices are available in our Power Supplies and Sources category.
If the DUT feeds power back during testing, a grid simulator capable of absorbing this power is required. Regenerative four-quadrant systems can also return the absorbed energy to the utility grid.
Are Grid Simulators and Mains Simulators the Same?
Yes. Mains simulator is another term for a grid simulator. Both terms refer to systems that reproduce defined electrical grid conditions for testing purposes.
